Quick update: After some digging through the settings, I found that the setting for Preferences/Interface/Grid View/RAW processing in Grid mode affects file loading when switching between Grid view and Single view.
When set to "Partial", the file loads automatically when switching to Single view.
When set to "Full", the file is not loaded automatically when switching to Single view and must be reloaded manually.
The manual does not appear to mention anything about this difference in behavior regarding this setting, but I have set it to "Partial" in the meantime so that file loading is automatic when switching to Single view.
