These are the ways I have tested switching from Grid view to Single view:
Hotkey: G
Double click on thumbnail
Menu: View -> Switch to single image
In all cases, the behavior is as shown in the previous screenshots.
Preferences->File Formats->Default image to display: RAW

Please note that the setup in the screenshots (panels hidden, single image, etc.) is to simplify things as much as possible for demonstrating the issue. The behavior when switching from Grid view to Single view is the same as in the screenshots when all panels are shown and browsing a folder with multiple images.
