1) Most today media is fast enough to not use on-disk thumbnail cache for RAW files, that's why on-disk thumbnail cache is disabled for RAWs by default. You may turn it on via Preferences (see manual link to specific page in my 1st reply) 2) For a (slow) external HDD you may need to tune FastRawViewer parallel level for both thumbnail building and for RAW data prefetch, it is also documented in the manual: https://updates.fastrawviewer.com/data/FastRawViewer2-Manual-ENG.pdf#pag... 3) It may make sense to check the actual operating speed of external devices: the wrong cable (or port) can reduce the reading speed several times
