Can you confirm what "View" is showing?

Hi,
I was using FRV to review and cull some pictures from a Nikon D500, mainly for sharpness.  I have the D500 configured to save NEF and "Fine" JPG in the same directory.
When I use FRV, I know that the "View" has 3 options, "R", "i" and "E".
Am I correct that, from a sharpness standpoint:

  • "R" ==> shows the RAW image
  • "i" ==> shows the JPG that is embedded in the NEF file
  • "E" ==> shows the JPG that is in the same directory

The reason that I am asking was it seemed like when I used FRV and "E" it wasn't quite as sharp as if I look directly at the .JPG file using another app, like the Windows 10 photo viewer (e.g. just click on the JPG file).

Dear Sir:

  • "R" ==> shows the RAW image
  • "i" ==> shows the JPG that is embedded in the NEF file
  • "E" ==> shows the JPG that is in the same directory

The above is correct. Different applications may use sharpening or some other ways of "improving" JPEGs (especially when not viewing at 100%), we don't use any by default. You can enable on-screen sharpening for JPEGs, Preferences - Sharpening/Other - have "Sharpen RAW files only" unchecked; and press "S" while vieweing the image.
